Retired UFC legend B.J. Penn was arrested in Maui early Sunday morning following an alleged fight outside of a local bar.
A former two-division UFC champion, Penn reportedly got into an altercation on Saturday night with patrons at Kauhale’s Bar in Kihei. His friend, Kuuipo Mokiao, tried to prevent Penn from engaging in a fight with them by pushing him. According to a report from Hawaii News Now, Mokiao told investigators that they went out to the parking lot where Penn punched Mokiao in the face and kneed him in forehead.
Mokiao checked in to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center where he learned he had a broken left orbital bone. Penn allegedly left the scene after security broke up the fight. Penn, 36, was later tracked down to a hotel in Wailea and arrested by police. He was charged with second degree assault and released on his own recognizance pending further investigation. Apparently, Penn also suffered a small cut on his right eye.
